Values act as our North Star. They keep us focused and moving in a certain direction. These three values help LBIC stay faithful to who we feel God’s calling us to be:
Jesus Centered
Relationally Focused
Justice Oriented
Jesus Centered
Jesus is how we know who God is and what God is like. We believe if we want to know God – then we look at Jesus. Many of us have had to heal from concepts or images of God that look nothing like Jesus. Jesus defines both what God is like – and how a true human being was meant to live. We look to Jesus to understand who God is, and also to understand who we are. (John 1; Colossians 1:15-23; Hebrews 1:1-3)
Relationally Focused
Discipleship takes place in relationship with other people. We take Jesus’ words to heart that the world will know we’re his disciples if we love one another. That’s not always easy. We don’t have a perfect community. We’ll probably hurt one another along the way. But how will we work toward healing? How will we work to bind our wounds with the love of Jesus? The rubber hits the road in our discipleship when as we embrace the command of Jesus to love one another. (John 13:34-35; Matthew 18:15-20; Luke 6:27-36)
Justice Oriented
We get our view of justice from Jesus – and Jesus gives us his view of justice on the cross. It’s not punitive. It’s restorative. The justice of Jesus brings together what has been torn apart. It reconciles. It brings peace. Our world is fractured – and we want to join Jesus in mending it. (Leviticus 25; Isaiah 1:15-17; Micah 6:8…and well, the message of the prophets!; Luke 4:14-30)
